LIHUE — Hawaii authorities have arrested a man suspected of demanding money from people who needed help during severe flooding on Kauai island.
Police say the man is accused of taking advantage of residents and visitors who were stranded during the weekend’s historic rain and flood.
Hawaii News Now reports victims told police that several boaters offered them a ride to a safe location, but just as they approached shore, they stopped their vessels and demanded money before continuing.
Big Island resident Liana Leaulii says she was told it would cost $200 per person.
Police arrested a man on suspicious of extortion, robbery and terroristic threatening.
Police say the suspect is a self-described pirate who has had run-ins with the law.
